Patricia Reynolds, called Patsy, has waited for years to fulfil her dream: going to the USA and leaving Jamaica behind. Even though she only got a visitor’s visa, she plans to never come back and instead make a career in the north just like her best friend Cicely. She abandons her daughter Tru who is too young to understand what happens and now has to cope with living with a new family while her mother seemingly enjoys her life in the Big Apple. However, it does not take too long for Patsy to understand that nobody waited for illegal immigrants and that she will have to take cleaning and nursing jobs to survive. The years pass and while Patsy slowly has to accept that her dream of a better life will never come true, her daughter struggles to find her place in a world that she simply does not fit in. She wants to play football like the boys and tries to ignore all signs that make her a girl.Nicole Dennis-Benn’s novel offers a broad variety of subjects ranging from the situation of undocumented immigrants and their lives in the shadows, dreams her characters have that simply do not come true, the concepts of being a man or a woman and behaving according to others’ expectations, what it means to be a mother and to stick to your ideas and goals in life nevertheless, love and abuse, unhealthy relationships and dishonest friendships. The author wonderfully parallels the developments of mother and daughter under harsh circumstances in the two different countries. Albeit the fact that there is an age gap of 21 years, a lot of progress is analogous like adapting to a new situation, high hopes that increasingly have to be adjusted to reality and finally, finding love where they never would have expected it. Especially Patsy’s American Dream gone bad is very powerfully narrated, most of all the moments when darkness surrounds her are most compelling. While I found most of the plot very interesting and brilliantly narrated, the novel was a bit too long and thus lengthy at times for my liking.
Patsy's daughter endured. She survived. She is the light in this somewhat dark novel : a novel of abuse and sadness and a glimmer of hope. Many women leave their children to migrate, They feel they have no choice, and, sometimes they don't. They are running away from one kind of hardship or another. These left behind children are, in Jamaica, called 'barrel children'. They are left with family or friends; with promises from the mother to 'send money'. The mothers mostly do try, but when the barrels come, the 'so called 'fam/friend' gives their own children the best from the barrel, and the money sent goes, guess where. Many suffer all types of abuses. It is speculated that much of the violence in Jamaica is a result of boys without mothers (where are the fathers)! They are the lured into a life of violence. The gang becomes the family. The novel seems preoccupied with sex. It is a rocky and dangerous road, when sex and its cousin love rule the head. Sense seem to disappear, leaving sorrow and regret, as Patsy learns.I am a Jamaican woman, and a legal immigrant. I understand what Pasty went through. You have to be an immigrant to truly understand the painful loneliness of moving to a strange land and leaving family and all that is familiar behind. I came alone at 20 years old to NYC. Just thinking of it brings a pain. But, we stick it; we believe this life will be better. Sometimes, it is, sometimes, it is not : dreams quickly crumble under the weight of reality. It is a good read, the dialect at times was distracting, but brought authenticity to the characters. A glossary for readers who many not know the dialect would have been helpful and perhaps expose the book to a wider audience. (there speaks a Librarian). Still, if needs be, one can go to search engine 'Bing' and get an explanation. I hope the book sells nuff copies.Thank you.
This is my favorite new book that I’ve read released far this year in 2019. A marvelous novel, heart wrenching and brave. The writing is amazing and there are passages and sentences that took my breath away. It is the book that I’d been waiting for this year. A refreshing and beautiful story...and I knew it from the first page. Don’t Miss This Book!
This is a really powerful novel, and it’s very timely. It’s easy to characterize it as a sad book but I think it is ultimately hopeful. I highly recommend it, and I’m grateful to the author for creating it.
Excellent, engrossing book about growing up in the island of Jamaica and making the decision to immigrate to Brooklyn, NY. It's about how hard life in the U.S. is for undocumented immigrants. Powerful book. You won't be able to out it down.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. As a social worker I have been privy to the impact of parental migration on children who h led me to research the topic for my graduate thesis. It was great to read a story albeit fictional about how migration impacts children and families. Uncovering the different layers to Patsy was also very impactful, her exposure to abuse, neglect from her mother, her feelings of inadequacy, her sexuality. This book had so many themes which I enjoyed reading about immensely. Another great read from Nicole Dennis-Benn!
